Job Summary

Under the direction of the Deputy Chief of Operations, the Platoon Chief will supervise and administer an assigned Platoon to ensure efficient and effective operations as well as execution of daily activities, and programs.

The ideal candidate will possess post-secondary education in Business, Public or Fire Administration, along with exceptional communication skills, leadership qualities, and proven ability in conflict resolution and critical and strategic thinking.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Supporting and advising Command staff during emergency response and incident operations.
• Ensuring the effective and efficient day to day allocation of resources.
• Ensuring the proper use of Incident Command, Accountability Systems, IRIC, RIC, and Incident Safety Officer as required.
• Acting as Senior Advisor at all Fire Suppression incidents of a second alarm or greater magnitude.
• Acting as Incident Commander at a fire or emergency scene as required.
• Ensuring the initiation and completion of fire investigations and fire cause determination; the notification of all appropriate internal and external stakeholders; activation of the serious emergency reporting; ensuring notification and reporting to Ontario Fire Marshall and Emergency Management (OFMEM) as required.
• Responsible for the general direction and coordination of the Platoon.
• Performing the duties of a supervisor and employer as prescribed in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• Supervising work activities, ensuring rules and regulations as well as policy and procedures and/or guidelines are upheld. Takes disciplinary action as required.
• Responsible for the appropriate deployment of all personnel, equipment and apparatus for their Platoon ensuring excellent customer service to Mississauga residents, businesses and visitors.
• Carrying out assigned duties in the Attendance Support and Management Program, maintaining attendance reports and approving Time and Labour records, coordinating, scheduling and authorizing overtime work.
• Overseeing day to day labour relations matters, dealing with employee issues and concerns.
• Participating in recruitment, and internal promotional processes and, making recommendations for staff development.
• Participating in the development, evaluation and revision of rules and regulations, policies, standard operating procedures, guidelines, long range plans and programs related to Operations and MFES.
• Administering and implementing assigned programs, executing administrative tasks as directed by the Deputy Chief of Operations.
• Coordinating, supervising, participating in and monitoring training programs, public education, inspections andother MFES programs.
• Acting as Designated Officer as required.
• Coordinating and controlling the issuing of protective equipment and uniforms to the assigned Platoon personnel.
• Responding to day-to-day questions from the public and the media.
• Acting as the Deputy Chief of Operations as required.
• Acting as a member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee including conducting workplace safety visits.
• Participating in community and corporate events as required.
• Must be available for shift work and attend meetings on non-regularly scheduled days.
• Performing other duties as assigned.
