Chief, Deputy Fire

Job Summary:
Under the general direction of the Fire Chief, plays an integral role in planning, evaluating, coordinating and implementing strategies and programs to prevent or mitigate the loss of life, property and environment in the City.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage and coordinate the daily operations for all platoon shifts, including emergency response, and oversees the fire and bylaw dispatch services.
Manage the department’s operations and activities to mitigate incidents pursuant to legislation, industry standards and the City mandate.
Ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, compliance with Industry Standards and Best Practices.
Manage, evaluate and coordinate activities at fire scenes and or rescue incidents and assist with fire investigation / cause determination as required.
Manage and provide leadership in all human resource areas, including safety, performance management, grievance administration, recruitment and application of progressive discipline.
Assist the Fire Chief in developing, evaluating and implementing municipal safety standards, policies, procedures, practices, administrative directives and bylaws for the department.
Assist with the development of the O & M and capital budgets for fire operations and dispatch.
Draft and process purchasing contracts for equipment, materials, supplies, capital goods and services. Maintain inventory of fire department assets.
Act as Fire Chief as assigned.

Position Requirements
Working Conditions:
Considerable work is performed under normal office conditions. Responds to emergency situations, many that occur outside of normal working hours. On-call duties is a requirement. Exposure to health hazards, smoke/fumes, chemicals, temperature extremes and noise in firefighting and emergency situations.
Knowledge and Skills:
Diploma in Public Safety or Fire Administration and 8 years previous related firefighting experience including 2 years at a supervisory level or an equivalent combination of education and progressively related work experience.
6 months on-the-job training.
Fire Fighter Certification Level I and II.
Fire Officer III.
Fire Investigation and Fire Inspection Level II.
Incident Command System 400 level training.
Incident Safety Officer.
Class 3 Drivers license & Air Brake Endorsement.
Standard first aid, CPR level C and oxygen therapy
Effective public relations and public speaking skills.
Excellent skills relating to communications, team building, liaise with stakeholders, human relations, and problem solving.
Ability to deal effectively with people in difficult situations.
Additional certifications required include but not limited to:
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Examples of Equipment to Operate:
All fire apparatus, fire rescue and related equipment including but not limited to: pumper, tanker, rescue vehicle, automobile extraction tools, wildlife firefighter and technical rescue equipment. General office equipment including computer skills to operate software programs related to work processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail, etc.
