The Opportunity
The City of Grande Prairie is looking for an individual who has exceptional customer service and who wants to be part of the GPFD training division. As Training Officer you will work with the Chief Training Officer to develop and deliver training on structural firefighting, dangerous goods response, motor vehicle extrication, medical co-response, technical rescue, and wildland firefighting. You will support our training of staff on evidence-based best practices and the latest equipment the fire service has to offer.
The Grande Prairie Fire Department (GPFD) is a career fire service comprised of a Fire Chief, Two Deputy Chiefs, sixty-eight (68) fire suppression personnel, five (5) fire prevention staff, Chief Training Officer, Training Officer, Logistics Officer, and thirteen (13) dispatchers. GPFD is a well-equipped, innovative fire service that enjoys positive labour relations and strong support from Senior Administration and City Council.
As you grow within the training division as a training officer, you will have the opportunity to branch into senior officer positions in Training, Logistics, and Fire Administration.

Minimum Requirements:
- NFPA 1041 (Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualification) Level I
- NFPA 1001 (Professional Firefighter Certification) Level II Certification; including NFPA 1072 (472) Hazardous Materials Responder Awareness and Operations (From an IFSAC or ProBoard Approved Institution)
- One of the three following types of medical training:
- Approved Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Training Course or proof of provincial equivalencies (NOTE: ACP registration is NOT required)
- Valid Advanced First Aid
- NAIT MFR Program Certificate.
- Class 3 and 4 Alberta Driver’s License with Air Brakes or proof of other Provincial equivalencies.
- Minimum of 9 years experience in municipal emergency response
- High School Diploma or equivalency
Preferred Qualifications:
- NFPA 1021 (Fire Officer Qualification) Level I
- NFPA 1041 (Fire Service Instructor professional Qualification) Level II
- NFPA 1521 Incident Safety Officer
- ICS 300
